Thanks for nothing
The passage of the Stupak Amendment has soured any positive feelings I might have had about the passage of the health care reform bill in the House of Representatives. See my Twitter page for more reaction. For those who don't understand why I'm furious and downright sick about this, check out the full text of the amendment. Here's what jumps out at me: No funds authorized or appropriated by this Act (or an amendment made by this Act) may be used to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion Can you see how broad that is? As Planned Parenthood states: "The Stupak/Pitts amendment would result in a new restriction on women’s access to abortion coverage in the private health insurance market, undermining the ability of women to purchase private health plans that cover abortion care, even if they pay for most of the premium with their own money." Make no mistake: House Dems (65 of them) that voted for this amendment have voted to throw women, especially poor women, under the bus in order to be able to say they passed health care reform. This is it. When I re-register to as a Michigan voter, I will be registering as Independent. If the Democratic Party refuses to fight for me, then I refuse to fight for it. Current Mood: disgusted |

I am Thankful for...
I am thankful for... oral surgeon Dr. Chen and his staff, the ER staff, and the sixth floor nursing staff at Maricopa County Hospital for taking good care of me. It was made very clear to me while in the hospital how close I came to dying. And I was a cranky and difficult patient (a lot of pain, morphine useless) but the nursing staff didn't take it personally. |

I'm thankful...
This got started in FB, but I think I'll also post these in my other social sites. Thx to Jill: Let's see how many ppl can do this. Every day this month until Thanksgiving, think of one thing that you are thankful for and post it as your status. "Today I am thankful for..." The longer you do it, the harder it gets! Now if you think you can do it then repost this message as your status to invite others to take the challenge, then post what YOU are thankful for today.Today (like most days) I am thankful for ... being surrounded by people who share their love, warmth, and caring with me. Having been sick so long, it's hard for me to be an active friend - yet many are very willing to still share their lives with me. Thank you. |

I am a n00b
I just started playing 360... I used to play WoW a lot (*cringe*), mainly because that's literally ALL my roommates do. I got really bored with it and we also have an xbox, so I canceled my WoW account and signed up for xbox live. The only games I've played very much so far are L4D and Borderlands, which I picked up yesterday. I love Borderlands a lot, it's probably my favorite game in a long time. Sometimes I can coax one of my roomates into playing splitscreen with me but really I'd like to have some friends I can play online with... I don't have any.
If you don't mind playing with a n00b (I'm not terrible, just faaaar from an experienced gamer as a lot of you are) then add me? My gamertag is absterse.
Thanks =) |

New Chip-In Info
Updated Chip-In entries, amount, and deadline: All I want for Christmas are my ... ... Teeth.FYI, you are my friend - being so is all I ask of you. Thank you for being in my life. However, if you have desire to help (as some of you have mentioned), this is a method you can. I DO NOT base my friendships upon who can or will give me money. *shudder* I'm not like that. I'm having enough trouble doing this fund-raiser because I'm uncomfortable even asking. So, please, do not feel any pressure to help me with this - I know we've ALL got a lot of stuff going on and I'm grateful you are my friend. <3 |

People keep asking me if I am happy out here. The answer I give right off the bat is that I am. But in reality I am for the most part. I love the house I live in. I love the area I live in. I love the city I live in. Melbourne is a really interesting city and one I am glad I have chosen to call home for this period of time. There are a lot of interesting places to explore (especially food and drinks wise which is a very good thing in my book) and a variety of people to meet. I have days where I am constantly seeing people and doing things (work not included in this) and then there are days with nothing. For example yesterday I had the day off because of the horses and was looking forward to hanging out with people the night before to take advantage of the fact. Everybody I texted though was busy. And then yesterday I moped around the house most of the day which included a two hour nap in the middle of the day. To be fair the last couple of weeks at work have been really busy so maybe I needed it but still! Something else I did whilst I was bored was joining a few groups on the website meetup.com (American Expats in Melbourne, British Expats in Melbourne, Food & Drinks Melbourne) and that sort of thing. I have no idea what to expect from it or if I will even attend any events but its something to consider. I also would really like to get out there and date more but I have no idea how to go about it. I am happy to join stuff like meetup.com but am hesitant to try online dating. Not sure why entirely. Overall Australian men have been very disappointing (in many regards) and would like somebody to redeem that!
I think my biggest problem/complaint/whatever you would like to call it is the isolation. I really miss my weekend trips away to different cultures and cities. At one point I was going away somewhere every month. The only option I have here is Sydney and Adelaide (the former I have been to and will go to again before I leave and the latter I am going to for the holidays). Otherwise it is just that bit too far really to justify a weekend away. We are really spoiled in London with its geography locating it so, so close to continental Europe and within an arms length to NYC. I think I am also having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that this will be the first time in 7 years I won't be living or visiting NYC and the first time in my life that I will have not been back to America. Very, very strange feeling.
Saturday will mark 4 months since I got here which seems hard to believe.

R.I.P. Stuart Duga
This seems to happen with more and more frequency as I get older. I find out that someone to whom I used to be somewhat close, someone with whom I've lost touch, has passed on. And I feel this sort of gentle, yet building, wave of regret that I didn't find a way to stay close, or get back in touch. So...Stuart. You were a friend in the giddy old days, when we would stay out all night at clubs and house parties, doing lots of substances represented by initials that were so bad for us but felt damned good at the time. You were someone I had a good time with for so many nights back in the mid/late 90s. You were someone I knew I could trust and feel safe with in terms of letting go of control and inhibitions back then, which was a sometimes-rare thing. You were the guy it was so easy to get silly with, and who just appreciated people, all people. I remember one night when we were hanging with our usual affection, and we talked about you being gay and my being straight, and you smiled and shrugged and said, "I just like cute people." A simple little statement, but one that said something about your openness and disposition. I remember running into you years later in Chicago, and us being happy to see each other, but distant. Time had passed, and the days weren't so giddy anymore, and that reckless abandon with which we'd lived life before was replaced, as it should have been, by cautious sensibility. I thought at the time that maybe we'd never had much in common beyond partying. I wonder now if we would have found common ground beyond partying if we'd tried. I don't know. Now we'll never know. Goodbye, Stuart. I wish I'd had the chance to know you again before you left. You were a bright light when I knew you. I hope you're in a better place now. Current Mood: sad |

So who picked up Dragon Age today? I'm interested in hearing what people are thinking about it. I'm considering getting the PC version, but achievement points have me on the fence XD. What's the initial reaction of the 360 version from the crowd? |

Gamertag: Onion Jack

Hey folks, Been lurking in this community for a few weeks now and finally had the time to make an actual post here to say hello. Currently playing: Borderlands, Brutal Legend, Fallout 3, Rock Band 2 and Rock Band: Beatles. Favorite Genre is RPGs but I like anything with a good story. I really dug Oblivion, Fable 2 and Lost Odyssey. It's one year later and I'm STILL playing Fallout 3; still not done with all the downloadable content. Bioware totally hit the mark with Mass Effect and I'm really chomping at the bit for both Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. I do play some shooters but again more for the story. Halo 3/ODST and Bioshock did really well with their stories and I enjoyed playing them. I do play some multiplayer, but I prefer team based games as I just don't have the reflexes to go head to head with a 10 year old and win. I am really looking forward to Modern Warfare 2 however; the perks level the playing field a little bit. Other than that, I tend prefer co-op to multiplayer. I'm always more apt to play some Gears of War 2 or Borderlands or any other titles that include co-op so hollar if you're up for that kind of thing. I'm also always up for arcade games, specifically Texas Hold'em, Magic: The Gathering and Catan if I can find people to play with. That also goes for Civilization: Revolutions. Multiplayer got a lot better when they fixed the Mega-City issue. Fire me an invite if you'd like. Just let me know it was from this LJ comm. Gamertag: Onion Jack |

Planting the seeds of tipsy If champagne and orange juice is a mimosa, and champagne and cranberry juice is a hybiscus, what is champagne and pomegranate juice called? I must name it, as it is delicious! But I'm torn... Both hibiscus and mimosa are flowers, therefore, it seems to follow that a cocktail of pomegranate juice and champagne should also be named after a flower. However, upon Wiki-research, pomegranate flowers are called balaustines [buh-laws-tin], and that just doesn't sound very lovely. On the other hand, I also learned that the word 'grenade' originally comes from the French word for pomegranate, 'la grenade', and since champagne is French, 'grenade' seems like a fine name for such a concoction. Thoughts? Suggestions? |
